Inspired by the&#38;nbsp;home&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;


The Emotional Landscapes series consists of six lithographs exploring the intimate spaces we call ‘home’. Inspired by my own experience of being raised in a household surrounded by women, I explore the ideas of domesticity, kinship, and femininity through these works. From the warmth of a sunlit kitchen to a dark corner of the bedroom, these prints attend to the nuances of domestic life, evoking emotions from joy to solitude, as well as memories and stories that resonate with the viewer.

Gaston Bachlard’s ‘The Poetics of Space’ was a significant influence during this project. Bachlard explores the idea of the childhood home being a universe in itself and a shelter from the outside world. My memories of childhood matched this theory of the home being a safe place to seek shelter. However, memories can be distorted over time, and not all homes are safe, happy, and comfortable spaces for everyone. Therefore, I wanted to explore the mixed emotions hidden within the wall of a home. Each print is a different room inspired by own memories and experiences of home.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>The Misery House

Inspired by Gudjon Bjarnason&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

This project explores memory and overlooked history by documenting the untold story of The Misery House, ,the remarkable home of Icelandic artist and architect Gudjon Bjarnason in Stokkseyri. I first came across the house in 2015 and was immediately struck by its raw, haunting presence. Years later, I reached out to Gudjon and discovered that the building was much more than a home it was an artistic experiment: his guinea pig, his baby, his diamond in the rough. Constructed using wood salvaged from a shipwreck, the house earned its name for both its origins and its atmosphere. Hearing Gudjon speak about it revealed a deeply personal relationship between maker and place, inspiring me to explore the poetic connections between landscape, memory, and the spaces we inhabit.

This house survived an Icelandic recession, numerous costume theme house parties, brutal weather conditions, vandalism, and arson. Gudjon imagined that one day it would be a museum of his life. Unfortunately, it was eventually torn down by the municipality in 2017. This drawing is an archive of Gudjon's memories, filled with his stories of The Misery House.

OCT / 2022Collaboration with Recycle Archaeology and Colouring In &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;Recycle X Illustration was a student
project between Kingston School of Art and Camberwell College of Art led by
Laura Copsey and Dr Rachel Emily Taylor. The project was linked with Dr Helen Wickstead, a founder of Recycle Archaeology, and hosted by Luise
Vormittag, a founder of Colouring In. I was commissioned to create a poster for Colouring In’s third issue ‘The Past’ and I had the opportunity to present our work and speak at their symposium about how illustrators might work with historical narratives and the past in their practice.

For the project, each student chose one ‘de-selected’
archaeological object from Recycle Archaeology’s archive. The objects I chose from the archive were two ceramic fragments. 

Helen predicted it was a type of stoneware from Germany from the 16th or 17th century. I was curious about how it had ended up here in London, so I set about my research on this object.

From process-led research, I discovered a Facebook group called ‘Bellarmine and Bartmann and other early stoneware jug/bottle, and earthenware’. It had 1.1K group members, including both archaeological experts and fanatics. 

Every day there were more and more posts of people sharing their objects with us and asking for stories about them. These strangers had created an online archive full of passion and information. This encouraged me to look at how heritage creates community and how illustrators can use it to tell a story.


My visual research method for this project was to cut up the images people had shared and digitally collage them as illustrations. The text in my poster was words written in the posts and comments by the people in this group. Like the images, the words were snipped-up poetry to reflect the breadth of conversation.
